چکیده

In real stochastic systems, the arrival and service processes may not be renewal processes. For example, in many telecommunication systems such as internet traffic where data traffic is bursty, the sequence of inter-arrival times and service times are often correlated and dependent. One way to model this non-renewal behavior is to use Markovian Arrival Processes (MAP’s) and Markovian Service Processes (MSP’s). MAP’s and MSP’s allow for inter-arrival and service times to be dependent, while providing the analytical tractability of simple Markov processes. To this end, we prove fluid and diffusion limits for both the MAPt/PHt/∞ and MAPt/MSPt/∞ queues by constructing a new Poisson process representation for the queueing dynamics and leveraging strong approximations for Poisson processes. As a result, the fluid and diffusion limit theorems illuminate how the dependence structure of the arrival or service processes can affect the sample path behavior of the queueing process. Finally, our Poisson representation for MAP’s is useful for simulation purposes and may be of independent interest.

Strong Approximations for Time-Dependent Queues

A time-dependent Mt/Mt/1 queue alternates through periods of under-, over-, and critical loading. We derive period-dependent, pathwise asymptotic expansions for its queue length, within the framework of strong approximations. Our main results include time-dependent fluid approximations, supported by a functional strong law of large numbers, and diffusion approximations, supported by a functiona...

A Comparative Study of the Construction of Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Facilities in Three South African Hospitals

Introduction: Development of higher energy modalities such as positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), has led to more complex shielding problems. This is due to several factors, such as the radiopharmaceutical relatively high-administered activity, high patient throughput, and high energies of 511 kilo-electron volt (keV) positron annihilation photon...

Strong Discrete Time Approximation of Stochastic Di erential Equations with Time Delay

The paper introduces an approach for the derivation of discrete time approximations for solutions of stochastic di erential equations with time delay. The suggested approximations converge in a strong sense. Furthermore, explicit solutions for linear stochastic delay equations are given.

Discrete Approximations of Differential Inclusions in Infinite-Dimensional Spaces

In this paper we study discrete approximations of continuous-time evolution sy~tems governed by differential inclusions with nonconvex compact values in infinite-dimensional spaces. Our crucial result ensures the possibility of a strong Sobolev space approximation of every feasible solution to the continuous-time inclusion by its discrete-time counterparts extended as Euler's "bro~ ken lines." ...

Semidiscrete Finite Element Approximations of a Linear Fluid-Structure Interaction Problem

Semidiscrete finite element approximations of a linear fluid-structure interaction problem are studied. First, results concerning a divergence-free weak formulation of the interaction problem are reviewed. Next, semidiscrete finite element approximations are defined, and the existence of finite element solutions is proved with the help of an auxiliary, discretely divergence-free formulation. A ...

Strong Approximations of Martingale Vectors and Their Applications in Markov-Chain Adaptive Designs

The strong approximations of a class of R-valued martingales are considered. The conditions used in this paper are easier to check than those used in [3] and [9]. As an application, the strong approximation of a class of non-homogenous Markov chains is established, and the asymptotic properties are established for the multi-treatment Markov chain adaptive designs in clinical trials.
